Male Red-Tailed Hawk keeps kestrels away from nest May 7 2010

When I arrived at work today the female was feeding the young. At lunch i went outside to see her feeding the eyas again. The male had just come by the nest when the kestrel again went after the hawks. The male flew around and around getting the kestrel away from the nest. Amazing the little kestrel must have attacked him 8 to 10 times. near the end of the day I peeked at the nest to see a eyas sitting beside the mom. My first true sighting. I tried to take a shot through the window but the rain disorted the shot. Hopefully some shots this weekend.

Both Red tailed hawks were hunting together May 6 2010

Today as I was coming in to work the 2 red-tailed hawks were soaring above me and then went over to the apartment building to hunt. Both were hoovering and went in for dinner on someones balcony. By the time I got upstairs there was a gull in the nest sitting beside the female.

Bob on the 2nd floor had a good look at one eyas - his words were cute and fuzzy I believe. Hopefully I will have photos this weekend.

Continued feeding of eyas May 3 & 4, 2010

At this time the female is constantly feeding the eyas. I know there are at least 2 maybe 3. The male brings in the food and leaves again.

Female Red Tailed hawk in nest May 1, 2010

On arrival at nest the red tail hawk was feeding the eyas. She then was trying to catch the bugs as they seemed to be bothering her. At one point she started to scream as a gull flew right above the nest and tried to go at the nest. Just before I left the female was feeding the young again.

I don't understand the gull attacking but another worker from the City was watching it also. He said he is there very early and the red tailed hawks like to sit on top of the government building and soar around.

2 Eyas maybe more april 28, 2010

Today Florence and Bernie joined me at the nest. WE did not see the male but we did see the female feeding the little ones. Only the tips of the heads were seen. Food was in the nest - female would feed herself then the eyas. The female looks fantastic.

Saw both adult hawks and watched the female bending over to feed the young. If you look really closely with a microscope you can see one eyas. Honestly I used the raw file with 200% increase in size - and you can see the little white face.

At lunch today I met Andrew and Murray for my hourly visit with the hawks. What a thrill it was after 10 min to see the male come in for a fly by. He soared around the nest and around Andrew and myself. He then flew below Ellemsere and continued to soar around. A cooper hawk went over the nest and into the woods. After the hawk gave us one more fly by he disappeared and Murray arrived -sorry Murray.
