The fight was taking place high in the sky. The shots are the best I could do with a 400mm. Double click to enlarge them.
Kestrel chasing Red tail in the air. The fight started here Red Tail sitting on condo and Kestrel attacks. 2 Peregrines join the fight (sorry they were really high) 2 TV pass overhead - nesting nearby
Today I watched one of the eyas flapping and sitting on the side of the nest. At the end of my lunch activity started. The red tail female flew off to sit on the top of the condo behind the Civic Centre when she was attacked by 2 kestrels. She flew back todays the nest and the kestrels continued to attack her - then a pair of peregrine falcons also came in - the male red tailed hawk also arrived to participate in this battle. By the end the peregrines were circling the nest - both red tailed hawks flew away and so did the kestrels. I went upstairs to look inside the nest and by the time I arrived back the female was back on the nest and I could see 2 eyas.
cute eyas Finally i was able to see the little eyas. I saw both - one on one side the nest and the other on the opposite. The eyas were testing their wings - flapping them in the air and very alert. The female red-tailed hawk also came into the nest with a fresh branch today with leaves. Female coming into nest with branch and leaves Eyas Flapping the wings - so tiny Egret flying over nest
Today I saw the female on the nest and clearly saw two eyas. May be more hiding but will have to wait and see. One photo through the window - all you can see is one white head. Can only see them from the 5th floor office window.
I was joined at the nest today by a John from Richmond Hill. It was bitterly cold and even saw snow come down. Very slow to start the day with little activity on the nest (we are sure it was because it was so cold) but finally the female sat up and fed the eyas. shortly after i saw a kestrel fly by the area. Minutes later we spotted the male flying around the apartments. He soared by us very high and disappeared to the south. Five minutes later he returned with food in his talon - some type of bird. After dropping off the food he sat in the nest for maybe 2 minutes then soared in the air and gave both John and I a terrific air show.
When I arrived at work today the female was feeding the young. At lunch i went outside to see her feeding the eyas again. The male had just come by the nest when the kestrel again went after the hawks. The male flew around and around getting the kestrel away from the nest. Amazing the little kestrel must have attacked him 8 to 10 times. near the end of the day I peeked at the nest to see a eyas sitting beside the mom. My first true sighting. I tried to take a shot through the window but the rain disorted the shot. Hopefully some shots this weekend.
