Look at the beautiful tail feathers on the eyas


The countdown is on and I know only a few days left to see the eyas on the nest. I was working downtown all day but stopped on my way to a meeting in Scarborough to see them. Jack said they were very wet red-tails all day. When I got there they were sitting on the branches all 3 preening themselves. The colouring on the back of the eyas is beautiful. Look carefully at the colour of the tail - and go back to a few weeks ago when the tail feathers were just little specks. Amazing birds.

Fly baby fly.

This morning it was an overcast day and terrible for taking photos. At my break I looked out the 5th floor window to see all 3 eyas huddled together facing each one another. I am sure they were plotting their escape from the nest lol. I went and grabbed my camera to take a photo since I know it will be one of the last times I see the 3 together. At lunch I also saw the 3 practicing their flying skills on the nest.
When it was time to leave and the rain was coming down steady the 3 of them looked really quite sad. They again were huddled together - as one eyas had his wings up (like the parent did when they were little)trying to cover up the other eyas. It is suppose to rain for the next few days so they will be miserable for a couple of days.

Watching the eyas today I wouldn't be surprised that they fly within the next couple of days. They are bouncing all over the tree and flapping up a storm. Tonight Carol and I went to have a look at them and the female was in the nest with them. She flew out and within a minute the male was also in the air beside her. He came right back with a full crop and his talons full of food for the eyas.

It will not be long before they are flying away. The eyas are jumping up and down on the branch now and you can see how they are getting more and more confident doing this. Female red-tail only comes in now to feed the eyas.

Eyas Branched Today June 14, 2009

Went to the nest today with my mom, Leslie, Mike, Frank and Walter and yes the first of the 3 eyas has branched. The smallest one is the one that branched. See attached photos of him sitting up on the branch quite proud - he came down and then back up again. The other two were just sitting quite content in the nest. No sign of either parent.

Saw all 5 red tails today June 12, 2009

Stopped in for a moment today and saw all 3 eyas in the nest just sitting there. The female was sitting in the nest for a short time then flew away toward the construction site. She was joined by the male. Last I looked they were sitting facing one another on the side of the building.

I saw both male and female flying today as well as the male bringing home lunch. The female was in the nest today and jumping from the nest to the branch and to another branch. It is time for the eyas to start doing this and I watched thinking she was teaching them how to do this. AMAZING.
I took some photos today of one eyas. Front and back so you can see the difference in the wings, colouring and tail feathers. Truly beautiful.
